Weight, yield and traceability

Steel is bought and sold by weight, but often counted in pieces, bundles or coils. Prices change often, and buyers ask for mill test certificates and heat numbers with every load. Scrap and yield decide whether an order makes money.

ERPNext handles stock in multiple units, links heat numbers to batches, and records scrap and yield in production. Your team can see actual weight, cost and margin for each order.

Common problems we see

  • Stock kept in pieces but sold in tonnes, or the other way round
  • Heat numbers and test certificates not linked to dispatches
  • Yield and scrap not recorded at each stage
  • Weighbridge slips entered by hand
  • Price changes not reflected quickly in quotations

How ERPNext helps iron and steel businesses

Standard ERPNext features, set up for the way your industry works.

Weight-based stock

Track stock in kg or tonnes alongside pieces, bundles or coils. Conversion factors can differ by item and size.

Heat number tracking

Use batches to record heat numbers. Each dispatch shows which heat numbers were supplied.

Mill test certificates

Attach or record test results against each batch and print them with the delivery documents.

Scrap and yield

Record scrap and end cuts in work orders. See yield by product, machine and period.

Job work

Send material for cutting, galvanising or other processes and receive it back with weight records.

Price lists

Update base prices quickly and apply size or grade extras through pricing rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can ERPNext connect to our weighbridge?

Not by default. We can integrate weighbridge software or hardware so weights come into ERPNext without manual entry.

Can we sell the same item in pieces and tonnes?

Yes. You can set a stock unit and other sales units with conversion factors for each item.

Can we trace a complaint back to the heat number?

Yes. Since each dispatch is linked to the batch and heat number, you can trace any supply back to its source.
